Hand saws are large saws without backs that are used for crosscutting or rip cutting wood into manageable pieces, or to rough dimensions. Hand saws have 20" to 30" long blades. Smaller hand saws are called panel saws and have blades that are less than 20". Hand and panel saws can be filed for rip or crosscutting and can have anywhere between 3 and 12 points per inch. Hand saws are essential woodworking tools. Every hand-tool woodworker will need one hand saw for rip cuts and one for crosscuts.
